The DamPlank is made from 'quartersawn' steamed beech wood.
When timber is quartersawn the tree trunk is first sawn radially in quarters relative to the heart, and then at right angles to the annular growth rings. This gives a more stable wood.
Beech is ideal for kitchen use because it has virtually no odour, has antibacterial properties and the right hardness and density for use as a chopping surface. The timber is moderately dense, fine-grained and strong, with a regular and close structure, and does not splinter.
Wood is never completely seasoned. Steaming has the effect of reducing its 'internal tension' and reducing any tendency to warp, shrink or expand.
The beech wood of the DamPlanks is homegrown in the Netherlands, of which I strongly approve. The closer the source the lower the environmental impact.
